Chapter 1: Befuddlement
(Friday)
The school bell rang.
Emma, Vanessa and Nicole were heading to the girl’s locker room.
"What are your plans this summer ", Nicole asked as they opened their lockers and put their things inside.
"I don’t know", Emma said and then asked Vanessa about the same question.
"Me? Sleep, run, walk, eat and breathe", Vanessa joked. The three laughed.
Christine and Hadey ran towards them breathlessly.
"Yes, it’s summer already! We’re totally free", Christine said.
"I’m so excited", Hadey said then the bell rang. The five girls quickly pulled out books and notebooks from each of their lockers and Emma, Vanessa and Nicole bid Christine and Hadey goodbyes as they headed their way to their classroom.
"Oh by the way, your birthday’s coming Nicole. Are you having a party", Emma asked Nicole who is busy trying to open her purse just to get something that seems to be very important. As Emma’s words sank into her mind, she lifted her face and hugged Emma tightly.
"That’s it! I’ll ask mum about it. I want it to be held in the Jacobe Spring. Maybe I’ll ask her too if you can stay there for vacation and help us prepare. We’ll have so much fun", Nicole said excitingly.
"That’s a great idea. What do you think Emma", Vanessa asked excitingly, with shining eyes.
"I don’t think so", Emma said thoughtfully. Emma wasn’t sure that her parents will allow her. It happened before and she didn’t want it to happen again.
"What do you mean of “I don’t think so", Nicole asked, eyeing her skeptically. Nicole was one of her best friends but not as close as Vanessa and she are.
"I don’t think mum and dad will allow me", Emma said as they sat in their chairs. Emma was seated in the third column at row two while Vanessa sat behind her while Nicole sat in front of her.
Nicole didn’t notice that their professor was already inside as she was facing Emma, her back to the front.
"I’m sure they will allow you. We’ll help you. Maybe my parents can tell your parents to allow you", Nicole said. Everyone was quiet leaving Nicole speaking. Emma and Vanessa kept making gestures to make Nicole stop but she just wouldn’t stop.
"I’ll tell mum and dad to—", Nicole started her professor interrupted.
"Ms. Jacobe, please sit properly and keep your mouth shut", their professor said angrily.
"I’m sorry sir", Nicole mumbled.
“I know this class is the last class for this and I know you’re dying to get out of here…” Blablablabla….
The whole class pretended to listen for their mind was thinking about something else. I think I don’t need to tell you what they’re thinking. When the bell rang the teacher said goodbye and went out of the classroom. Silence enveloped the whole classroom. Then it hit. All of them cheered and threw all the papers in the air. Some of them ran outside and joined their other friends. Emma, Vanessa and Nicole joined Christine, Hadey, Rico and Matt who met them halfway.
"Hey guys, I’ll be having my birthday party in the Jacobe Spring and you’re all invited to stay there before the day of my birthday and maybe the days after that until we decide to head back here", Nicole said.
"Well, that would be fun", Christine exclaimed excitedly.
"Aren’t you a little old for birthday parties?” Rico teased, a devilish gleam in his eyes. She smacked him in the shoulders playfully.
"Hey, a girl turns 17 only once. Besides, I’m still going to talk my parents about it." Nicole grinned. Her gaze found Matt’s gaze and silently cursed herself for her reaction when he smiled. She turned her gaze to the floor instead. They went home. They will talk about it later. After all, they all are neighbors.

In America, it was the last day of class in Daniel’s school too. He was at their house with his mum and dad eating breakfast.
"What are your plans on summer", Mrs. Hackfield asked Daniel.
"Mum, dad, can I continue my studies back there in London", Daniel asked his mum and dad.
"Well, that’s a good idea. What do you think, honey", Mr. Hackfield said in his agreement.
"No", Mrs. Hackfield said.
"Please", Daniel pleased.
"No", Mrs. Hackfield repeated.
"Honey, let him. Don’t you have trust on your own son", Mr. Hackfield asked.
"I have, but", Mrs. Hackfield said, hesitating.
"Then, let him. He’s old enough to take care of himself", Mr. Hackfield said then turned to Daniel, "Are you?"
"Yes. You can count on me", Daniel said.
Mrs. Hackfield sighed, knowing that when the two of them sided with each other, she is a loser. She loved the both of them so much that she will not do anything that will make them unhappy. “Okay, but don’t make important decisions on yourself without first informing us.”
"Great", Daniel said happily.
