Chapter 8: Jacobe Spring
Emma awoke at the same time the car stopped. She turned to look at Daniel who was still sleeping soundly, his neck arched to lean on the back of the seat. His face was relaxed making him look innocent. Unaware of his surroundings, she brushed his cheek with her finger. She traced his brows, nose and back to his cheeks. Lastly, she traced the outline of his lips. It felt soft. She continued tracing his face when a voice broke her thoughts.
“Do you want to go out or would you like to stay here and watch him sleep all day?” Emma was startled to see Nicole’s head peeping from the window.
“Uh – I’m just waking him up.” She said quickly and turned to look at the sleeping Daniel, “DANIEL! Wake up!” And when Daniel’s eyes stated to open, she quickly shuffled out of the van.
Daniel blinked his eyes and focused it on the door where Emma went then he looked at Nicole who was grinning like an idiot. He raised his eyebrow at her and she just smiled and then walked away. What was that?
Realizing that he was the only one left in the car, he went out and collected his trunks at the back of the car and brought it to the house. Everyone was already in their assigned rooms and he was supposed to share rooms with Rico and Matt. But, where the hell are they? He went upstairs and hesitated at the last step. There are five rooms in all in all, and if he opened the doors, what if he’ll accidentally open the girls’ bedroom the same time they are changing clothes. Sure it will be funny but what if it was Emma he’ll accidentally see? He didn’t know if he’ll enjoy it or not.
His problem was solved when he spotted Matt going out from the last door fro the left.
“Hey Daniel! Did you sprout roots from where you’re standing?” Matt asked, laughing at his own joke and went back in. Daniel laughed at himself and started walking towards they’re room when the first door he saw opened and Emma went out.
“Hey!” Daniel said and put a hand on her shoulder to steady her but ended up sprawled together on the floor. Emma’s face was staring up at him and her heart’s started to beat crazily inside her chest. Daniel’s face was close enough that if she tries to move her head to the side, she might probably end up kissing him. Oh how she wanted to him, to kiss those soft lips of his. I’m being crazy. Having no choice, she just continued to stare up at his green eyes.
Those green eyes were doing the same. They were staring at her own eyes like they were searching her very soul. They didn’t know how long they were doing that, staring at each other like idiots until someone cleared his throat and some giggling.
Waking up from their trance, Daniel struggled to get up and held a hand for her to use. She put her hand in his and felt those sparks that shot to her toes. She swept her gaze around the room to see Vanessa and Nicole giggling like crazy so there was no problem in identifying the source of all the noise.
She saw Christine and Haley going to where Vanessa and Nicole were and asked what were all the commotion about, then their faces lighting up after hearing what it was. The two boys were smirking as if they were enjoying both her and Daniel’s discomfort.
The last face was not worth seeing for. For it was what Emma didn’t expect. What she saw made her cringe inwardly. Sabrina’s face was contorted with anger like an evil witch, it was red from fuming and if she was from an animated movie, her ears will be shooting smoke. She swore she could the hatred burning in Sabrina’s eyes.
If it wasn’t for Vanessa’s mention of her name, she wouldn’t have realized that Sabrina was making her way towards her. Looking at her face, Emma had the urge to cringe away and hide behind Daniel but Emma knew better. She knew Daniel didn’t know about this thing between her and Sabrina and she didn’t want him to see that she was not brave enough to face an angry Sabrina.
Sabrina was halfway to her when she stood straighter and then she lifted her chin defiantly. The room was suddenly quiet and she could feel Daniel’s confuse eyes staring heatedly on her face. She could feel herself heating up because of that but she shook the feeling away. She was mentally shouting at herself at her weakness when Sabrina reached her spot in front of her, staring levelly at her angrily.
Then she suddenly felt afraid. Sabrina was just a jealous teenager confronting the source of her jealousy so why feel afraid. What would Daniel think after this confrontation, she didn’t want to know. All she knew is Daniel was calming her by taking his hand in his and squeezing it reassuringly. And she was surprised that it was really calming her. After that, she wasn’t afraid anymore.
She could feel herself heating up because of that but she shook the feeling away. She was mentally shouting at herself at her weakness when Sabrina reached her spot in front of her, staring levelly at her angrily.
"Do something Sabrina and the next thing you’ll knew, you’re being hauled from here by the security guard back to home. Got it?" Nicole was suddenly behind Sabrina and from the look on her face, they knew that she was mad.
Sabrina was humiliated. How dare that Nicole say that to her? Then she realized that she was being utterly stupid. Of course, the answer is clear. Nicole is only the daughter of the Jacobe Spring owners. She could be kicked out of the resort any time the daughter wants. Embarrassed, she faced the fact that she can’t do anything to Emma right now. But there will be another time, she told herself. Red face, she turned to Nicole, gave her a shocked expression and said in an shocked tone, "Did you think I would want to do something to Emma? You’re being ridiculous. I just wanted to see if Daniel was alright, that’s all"
Nicole didn’t believe her and Emma didn’t either, but before anyone could say anything, Daniel spoke.
"Thank you for your concern Sabrina. I’m fine and so is Emma. There’s really no need to be concern." Daniel smiled at her and unconsciously put his arm around Emma’s shoulder, showing that he’s alright.
The message was clear and Sabina knew it. But she decided that this won’t be the last time that Emma will get away. She’ll let it slip this time. Smiling at him sweetly, she turned and marched stiffly down the stairs followed directly by her cousins; Christine and Haley.
Emma released the gust of breath she didn’t know she was holding when Sabrina’s back disappeared from their view. When she made a move to follow, she was halted by Daniel’s tightening grip on her arm.
"Not yet. I have to talk to you about what happened." Daniel whispered in her ear. His warm breath causing her to shiver and her knees to get wobbly. But she managed to keep her upright. Vanessa, sensing her discomfort, came to her side.
"Are you okay? Do you want to rest? I can keep you company if you like." Emma can sense the concern in her friend’s voice but the grip Daniel still had on her arm was reminder enough that she has to stay or else Daniel will be pestering her all summer. She knew Daniel, that’s why she knew he will not let it go easily.
Emma shook her head in denial and was surprised at how calm her voice came out. "I’m okay. You go ahead, I’ll be along." Vanessa was still hesitant but dragged herself when Nicole grabbed her away.
It was silent for a moment and then Daniel spoke quietly with a chuckle, "It seems like Vanessa’s afraid to leave you alone with me."
"It’s not that, she just sensed that you’re gripping me way to hard on the arm it seems like you’ve stopped the blood from flowing through my arms." Emma hissed and after her words sunk into his head, he instantly remove his tight grip on her arm. Emma nursed her arm and faced Daniel who was grinned sheepishly at her.
"Sorry about that. I’m just a little dazed because of what happen a while ago. You wanna talk about it?" Daniel said, staring at her face, willing her to look him in the eyes and tell him the truth like before. Only now she can’t do it without wanting to kiss him.
"It was nothing serious. It’s just a little misunderstanding between the two of us. It’s nothing for you to be concerned about." She said with a smile. Emma was finding it more and more difficult to act nonchalantly in front of him. In fact, she was praying that the floor would split up and swallow her alive. She didn’t want to tell him about Sabrina’s jealousy because…..because…..
Because if he’ll discover the truth, you’re afraid that Daniel will be taken away from you…. The same voice like before said in her mind. Her heart ran 100 kilometers per minute at the thought of it.
That’s impossible. I’m just afraid that Daniel will think badly at Sabrina for doing this to me. She argued back.
You’re afraid that he’ll consider Sabrina’s feelings for him and left you alone. The voice again.
Daniel will never do that. She thought.
"I will never do what?" Not until she heard him ask did she realized that she had spoken the thought aloud. She looked at Daniel to see confusion written on his face.
She shook her head vigorously as if to shake the thought away. "Nothing. Look, just let it go okay? It’s fine and this doesn’t concern you. What’s been happening is between me and Sabrina. I have to go." With that, she turned and fled down the stairs.
But not before she saw the hurt that flashed into his eyes.
